WHEN Darwin's Origin of Species was published, the wife of the Bishop of Worcester is reputed to have exclaimed: “Descended from apes! My dear, let us hope it is not so; but if it is, that it does not become generally known.” The irony is that, although it is demonstrably not true, the idea has become generally believed.

There were a few discerning people in Darwin's time who could see the consequences of believing Darwin's ideas, such as geologist Professor Sedgwick, who warned that they would “brutalise” humanity. There is much soul-searching and debate in our society concerning the moral breakdown, particularly following the rioting and looting in some English cities “We must teach young people the difference between right and wrong!'” is the cry from many, yet at the same time we are told that this can be done without reference to God or religion. The unpalatable truth is that Darwin's chickens are coming home to roost!  Evolution is all about the triumph of the strong over the weak. If we evolved by the elimination of weaker and less successful species, then isn’t it 'natural' to be aggressive? Even prominent evolutionist and atheist Professor Richard Dawkins is worried about the implications. He wrote: “Darwinism, as a system of values, is deeply pernicious and evil and should be fought against. A Darwinian society would be a very unpleasant society in which to live.”1

Because there is much ignorance of history we are slow to learn its lessons. Darwin's book was quickly translated into German, and his theory took root there much more rapidly than it did in Britain. Hitler, with his vile theories of a 'master race', emerged from this background, and ended up killing 6 million Jews in the gas chambers. We express horror at such atrocities, and call ourselves civilised, yet every day in Britain more than  400 unborn children are killed by abortion. This is done in the name of 'women's rights' with no thought for the rights of the unborn child. Evolution encourages us to put our own 'rights' before our responsibilities toward others — to love ourselves more than God or our neighbour.

Those who assert that we can have morality without God overlook a vital issue — who makes the rules? Without some outside point of reference do we decide the difference between right and wrong? The alternative to accepting God-given rules of conduct is to make up the rules as we go along — a sure recipe for disaster! We end up with a situation like that mentioned in the book of Judges: "In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.” (Judges  17: 6). And the reason? ' “Another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.” (Judges 2: 10). Isn’t this what we are seeing today? A generation has grown up without the knowledge of God and His moral law. But just as the rebellious Israelites embraced pagan religions, so this generation has embraced the pagan religion of evolutionary humanism! Of course, most people, including the young, are decent and law-abiding, but a growing number has no respect for authority, and objects to being told how they should live.

Some humanists admit the moral dilemma created by evolution. Dr Will Durant wrote: “By offering evolution in place of God as a cause of history, Darwin removed the theological basis of the moral code of Christendom. And the moral code that has no fear of God is very shaky. That's the condition we are in.”2 So there we have a humanist, who doesn't believe in God, admitting that we need to believe He exists in order to preserve the social order!  The late Dr Francis Schaeffer wrote: “If man is not made in the image of God, nothing then stands in the way of inhumanity.”3 A whole generation has been fed a false view of its origins, and as long as people continue to be taught they are the products of evolution the moral problems facing our society will continue, and we can only guess what horrors may lie ahead. Today, the resources necessary to expose the evolution lie are readily available. Like Gideon of old, let’s root out this modern-day Baal and restore belief in God as Creator!
